Why do thoughts occur while meditating and what can be done to prevent them?
A devotee came to me and said:
“Guruji, while meditating, I concentrate, but thoughts keep coming again. When I focus my mind, the thoughts diminish a bit, but then they come back. When will I lose these thoughts? When will the state of thoughtlessness come? When will the meditative state come? When will Samadhi come? When will I attain knowledge of Brahma? When will I understand the knowledge of the Atma? When will I have the realization of the Atma and understand God? All this feels like a burden, Guruji. Instead of this, it feels like I would have more peace by drinking and lying down than achieving Samadhi. I have been meditating for 30 years, but I cannot stop my thoughts for even 30 seconds.”
Then I asked him, “How do you meditate?”
“I am not married. After I come home from work, I meditate and read books. This is my lifestyle, Guruji. I have been doing this for 30 years. I am 55 now, Guruji,” he said.
“I asked him if you have ever done seva (selfless service). Seva is a waste of time guru. If you devote it to meditation, it will be over,” he said.
I asked if you ever donated. Donating is a waste of money Guru. If you buy a book and read it, you will get knowledge, what will you get if you donate, Guruji? Nothing will come,” he said.
“And how can you meditate without doing all these things? How can you have children without getting married and taking on responsibilities? One who does not take on responsibility and burdens do not deserve to experience their status, nor do they deserve to receive their merits. When you do not serve and donate, meditation is not possible. Only when you serve will your mind be purified. When you donate, your heart will be purified. Only by doing these things will your soul come to you, and you will be able to meditate.”
If I give money to God, will he stop my thoughts? If there is something like that, tell me, Guruji. I will give all the money to him. Tell him to make sure that I don’t get even a single thought
“You fool, giving money does nothing to stop the thoughts of God. When you donate money, your heart is purified. donation purifies the heart. It is quality that matters here, not money. It does not matter whether you give a rupee or ten rupees. How much power do you have to give, The point is, if you have the power to give a hundred rupees, you will give as much as you have the power to give. Whoever obeys that power, their heart will be purified. Donation purifies the heart. Service purifies the mind, Meditation purifies the body. We have three karmas. These five physical bodies consisting of Samchita, Prarabdha, and Agami karmas can be purified in a second by meditation. Meditation is purification. God is not responsible for this. Meditation is your responsibility. When you meditate, the body becomes purified.”
